Larnaca Airport to Protaras by Hire Car

Protaras is served by a single practical gateway: Larnaca International (LCA), just 70–80 km and roughly 55 minutes along the A3 motorway. Paphos airport is nearly 180 km away and simply not worth it.

The Drive from Larnaca Airport to Protaras

Once you leave LCA arrivals and join the A3 (Larnaca–Ayia Napa motorway), the route to Protaras is almost entirely dual-carriageway. Stay on the A3 east toward Ayia Napa, then follow the B3 coast road north for the final stretch into Protaras and Pernera. Distance is roughly 70–80 km; allow 50–60 minutes in normal traffic, a little more if you arrive during the summer evening rush.

Paphos airport (PFO) is ~180 km and 2.5 hours from Protaras. Unless your flights genuinely require it, ignore PFO: the extra driving time and fuel cost far outweigh any perceived fare saving.

Before you join the A3 for the late-night drive, fill up near the airport. An EKO station on Protaras Avenue (no. 268) does operate 24-hour automated pumps, but automated pump payments place a €60–75 pre-authorisation hold that UK banks routinely take 3–7 days to release. Where possible, top up at a staffed till during the day instead.

Our driving in Cyprus guide covers everything you need to know about road rules, speed cameras and the Cypriot habit of slow drivers lingering in the outside lane — worth a skim before you set off.

Collecting Your Car at Larnaca Airport

There are two types of desk at LCA and they work very differently. Understanding the difference before you book saves you an unpleasant wait after a long flight.

International Brand Desks (Arrivals Hall)

Avis, Sixt, Europcar and Hertz all have desks inside the arrivals hall. This sounds convenient, but several large UK charter flights can land within minutes of each other, and queues of 45–60 minutes are common in July and August. These desks also apply an airport surcharge of 10–20% on the base daily rate.

Off-Site Budget Operators

Many cheaper aggregator firms operate from the Dromolaxia industrial estate, a few kilometres from the terminal. They send a shuttle bus to meet you, but the combined wait for the bus plus the drive to the depot and paperwork can add a full hour to your journey. Factor this into your plans if you have onward connections or very young children.

True Meet-and-Greet Operators

The better local and regional firms offer a genuine meet-and-greet service: a representative waits in arrivals with a name board, the car is already in the short-stay car park, and the handover takes under 15 minutes. This is the smoothest option if you want to be on the A3 quickly.

Out-of-Hours Collections

UK flights frequently land late in the evening or in the early hours. Most LCA desks operate roughly 08:00–21:00. Collecting outside these hours typically triggers a surcharge — Avis, for instance, charges a €60 late-pickup fee. Always provide your flight number at booking and confirm any after-hours arrangement in writing so there is no dispute on arrival.

Resort Delivery: The Relaxed Alternative

If your flight lands late or you simply want to unwind on arrival, consider skipping the airport desk entirely. Take a private transfer from LCA to your Protaras hotel (typically €50–60 one-way), sleep, and have the hire car delivered to you the following morning.

  • You inspect the car in proper daylight — far easier to spot pre-existing scratches than under airport car-park lighting at midnight.
  • The hire period starts on day two, so you pay for one fewer day of hire.
  • Local firms including Windmills, Sixt Protaras and Champion regularly deliver to hotels in Protaras, Pernera and Kapparis.
  • You avoid the airport surcharge entirely and can take your time reading the excess documentation before signing.

Once you have your car, the whole east Cyprus coastline opens up. You can reach Cape Greco and Fig Tree Bay in under 15 minutes, and the drive along to Famagusta and Ayia Napa is equally straightforward.

Before booking, compare car hire deals to see which firms offer free hotel delivery for your dates — some waive the delivery fee entirely in high season.

Avoiding the Open-Jaw Trap

Some travellers book an open-jaw itinerary — flying into Larnaca and home from Paphos — hoping to see more of Cyprus. From Protaras this is nearly always a mistake.

Most Famagusta-district hire firms are LCA-aligned: their fleet circulates between the airport and east Cyprus resorts. Asking them to retrieve a car from Paphos, 180 km to the west, is either refused outright or charged as a one-way relocation fee. International chains (Avis, Hertz, Europcar) can do it, but their one-way fee is typically €40–50 on top of the hire cost. If you miss the return window and need to catch a flight from Paphos independently, a private transfer will cost €100–120.

Treat Protaras as an LCA-only destination. If you genuinely need a Paphos departure, plan to return the car to LCA and arrange separate onward transport to PFO rather than relying on a one-way drop.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the drive from Larnaca Airport to Protaras?
Roughly 70–80 km along the A3 motorway and B3 coast road, taking 50–60 minutes in normal traffic. Add 10–15 minutes during summer evenings when the Ayia Napa–Protaras coastal strip gets congested.
Is Paphos airport a realistic option for Protaras?
Not for most visitors. Paphos is ~180 km and around 2.5 hours from Protaras. Unless a specific fare saving is very significant, Larnaca is the only sensible choice.
What happens if my flight lands after the hire desk closes?
Most desks close around 21:00. Out-of-hours collection triggers an additional surcharge — Avis charges €60 for late pickups. Always notify the hire firm of your flight number when booking and get written confirmation of any after-hours arrangement before you travel.
Can I collect at the airport and drop off somewhere else in Cyprus?
A one-way drop to Paphos with an international chain typically costs €40–50 extra, and most local Famagusta firms will not accept a Paphos return at all. If you need a different drop-off point, clarify this at the time of booking — do not assume it is included.
Is there a petrol station near Protaras open overnight?
Yes — an EKO station on Protaras Avenue (no. 268) has 24-hour automated pumps. Be aware that card payments at automated pumps place a €60–75 pre-authorisation hold that UK banks may take 3–7 days to clear. Try to fill up at a staffed till in daylight if possible.
What is resort delivery and how does it work?
Several local firms — including Windmills, Sixt Protaras and Champion — will deliver a hire car directly to your hotel in Protaras, Pernera or Kapparis. You take a private transfer from the airport on arrival day (around €50–60), rest, and the car appears at your hotel the next morning. This lets you inspect the vehicle in daylight and means your hire period starts a day later.
